Sedation and Sleep Dentistry

Milder Comfort:

Flavoured numbing cream (Topical Anaesthetic):

If you require an injection for a dental procedure at Launceston Dentaltown, flavoured numbing cream is applied by our gentle dentists before the procedure begins to make sure the area is nice and numb.

Injections (Local Anaesthetic):

Before we deliver local anaesthetic at Launceston Dentaltown, we make sure the local anaesthetic is nice and warm and we deliver it slowly. We use modern formulation local anaesthetics that are powerful and appropriate for dental procedures. We pull the cheeks and create tension as well when we deliver it. Our Launceston dentists give the anaesthetic plenty of time to take effect and test the teeth prior to starting the procedure. If you are uncomfortable at any point or you would like the dentist to stop, raise your left hand. You are in complete control of the procedure.

Stronger Comfort:

If you have had haunting past experiences, scared of needles, a strong gag reflex, a long procedure booked, or a sore jaw, you may want something a bit stronger to make your dental treatment more comfortable. The answer is sedation dentistry. Some types of sedation dentistry that we can organise at Launceston Dentaltown include: oral sedation, intravenous sedation or general anaesthetic. Our Launceston Dentaltown dentist would be able to recommend which sedation option might be best for you.

Types of Sedation:

Oral Sedation:

This method of sedation uses a pill to relax you before your appointment. You may be requested you to come in an hour early to take the medication. Once the medication starts acting, you should feel relaxed and would be able to follow the instructions given by our gentle Launceston Dentaltown dentist during the procedure. You usually remain awake but could feel drowsy, therefore you need to be escorted home and not drive or operate any machinery for the rest of the day.

Inhalation Sedation:

Also called as laughing gas or happy gas, which involves you inhaling a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a mask or hood to help the you relax before the procedure. At this stage, we do not currently offer this service at Launceston Dentaltown.

Intravenous Sedation:

This is a quick, safe method that allows dental procedures to be performed under medications given with an injection in the arm. Once induced the patient is relaxed and feels drowsy but will remain awake during the procedure but won’t remember anything. At the end of the procedure, the patient would take a few minutes to recover and would be monitored by one of our Launceston Dentaltown team. After the treatment, the patient must be escorted home and must be looked after for the next 24 hours by a responsible adult.

General Anaesthetic:

This method of sedation puts the patient to sleep during the procedure and occurs in the local private hospital St Vincents or St Lukes. Specialist trained Anaesthetists will induce a sleep like state and monitor it while the Surgeon or Dentist performs the required dental procedure. We can facilitate this referral if patients request it and prefer it over the aforementioned options.
