Do I or my child need to have braces?
95% of orthodontic treatment, sometimes known as braces, is elective, meaning that you don’t have to get it done if you don’t want to.
A lot of the time it’s for cosmetic reasons or to help clean the teeth as it’s more difficult to clean the teeth when they are more crowded or there is overlap.
It can happen, but very rarely, sometimes teeth aren’t set up in a way where the patient can bite and chew properly. In that case it is recommended to have orthodontic treatment or braces.
But most of the time it’s for cosmetic reasons and having cosmetically unappealing teeth can result in psychological trauma to a child going through school, etc.
So having nice looking teeth, which is subjective, is important for the patients confidence and their self-esteem.
